Description
For the independent traveler to Kyoto looking to live very much as a local for an extended stay of one month or more, the Gion Apartments are a perfect alternative to run-of-the-mill hotels in the same price category. Each apartment is outfitted with the same basics that one has for apartment living, such as a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, and more space than one finds in a typical hotel room. The apartments are furnished with a careful eye to aesthetics as well as comfort.
The location is within a modern residential apartment building located in the southern part of Gion, a historic neighborhood located in the Higashiyama district, in central Kyoto. Gion is recognized as one of the most desirable areas for visitors to stay in. As one of the best known geisha districts in Japan, it has many carefully preserved historic buildings, as well as an abundance of temples and tourist sites within walking distance. The back streets of the Gion area are about as charming and atmospheric as you'll find... perfect for a romantic evening stroll. Shops, restaurants, and access to trains, buses, and taxis are just steps away. Kyoto's bustling commercial district (Shijo/Kawaramachi) is just 15 minutes walk away. Kyoto Station is 15-20 minutes away by bus, or 10 minutes by taxi.
Provided for your comfort are two twin beds, with an additional single futon available upon request. In addition there is a sofa with coffee table, a small dining table with chairs, fully equipped kitchen, and washer and dryer. Also there is a television as well as a high-speed wireless internet connection.
In terms of size, the apartments are roughly 25 square meters. It's just right for two persons, but will also work for three persons (the third person sleeping on a futon placed in the living room.)
Guest services are handled by an American/Japanese team, ensuring smooth communication for English-speaking visitors to Kyoto. We strive to provide quick and clear responses during the reservation process, as well as during your stay in Kyoto.

Our two families (4 adults, 1 young teen and 1 older teen) stayed for a week in 2 apartments side by side...the apartments were spotlessly clean, comfortable, well stocked, and everything from the washing machine to the rice cooker was labeled in English. The owner thought of everything, including instructions to the grocery store. Good location, close enough to walk to train stations or wander nearby streets.
My wife and I stayed here after staying 5 days in Tokyo. It was wonderful and relaxing. The washer/dryer is a plus. The location is close/walking distance to quite a few wonderful neighborhoods and temples. Local restaurants are quite good. I would absolutely recommend this place to any friend wanting to stay in Kyoto.
We absolutely loved our stay at the Gion Apartments. The apartment is in a quiet area while being accessible to lovely parts of Kyoto. The place is clean, cozy, and in a great location. There are restaurants, stores, and a train station all within a 5 minute walk. We also rented the bikes and rarely left home without our wheels. Communication with the owner was always quick and helpful. We would definitely return, and have already recommended Gion Apartments to friends.
Fantastic team ensuring smooth check-in and managing all the details to ensure a perfect stay! Apartment - immaculate, comfortable, well equipped, secure and very quiet. Location - excellent, close to public transport options, grocery stores and small shops - plus so many fabulous restaurants just around the corner. Be sure to explore this terrific neighborhood - and remember to visit the local temples at your doorstep. This experience really gives you the feeling of what it's like to be a local! We plan on returning!
We thought Gion Apartment was fabulous for our 11 nights in Kyoto. Spacious and well accommodated for our 1 year old. Not a far walk from a train station, and a short walk to the more tourist-y area of Gion. Nice little local area too with recommendations from Curtis, which were great.
My wife and I chose to rent an apartment because we wanted the feeling of living in Kyoto. We were so glad we did. After the first few days of our two week stay, it really began to feel like home. The apartment is located in a great neighborhood with many things to do and see within walking distance. The layout of the apartment is smart and efficient which makes for a very comfortable stay. With a self check-in system the process a breeze. We've already decided that this will be our first choice when we return to Kyoto.
Very comfortable apartment. We found the apartment to be spotlessly clean, well appointed and very quiet, much appreciated after having been in Tokyo for a week. As previously mentioned in another review, the photos and description are perfectly accurate, and the self checkin works very well. Being December it was quite cool - the heating works well and the down comforters were lovely and cozy. We had no problems at all and found the details of grocery stores, etc in the information book to be very helpful. There are a number of little restaurants on Gojo and we particularly liked the Udon Sanshiki, where we ate on a cold rainy night. Very welcoming, average prices and decidedly above average food and attention to detail. A young chef who deserves to do well. I would love to have the opportunity to stay here again.
If you really want to explore Kyoto, a couple of days isn't enough. You need at least five days or more, to really soak in the history, the heritage and the culture. For extended stays of a week or more, the Gion Apartment is the best bet for your stay. Five minutes walk to the Kiyomizu Gion MRT station (with lift access) and smack in between the station and the key attraction of Kyoto, the Kiyomizu-Dera temple complex. From the Gion Apartment, you'd make your many walks and trips to the heritage areas, the Pubbing streets and the Gion shopping district. It is walkable from Kyoto main station (20mins, scenic walk along the river). The apartment had everything you need in a one-bedroom-one living-dining room setup. Beds, futons, induction cooker, family-sized fridge, microwave, washer-dryer, shower and bath. It is clean, well-maintained and safe (with 24-hours security access) without the hassle of a registration-desk for check in. Everyting is via the phone and the internet. The good thing about staying at Gion apartment is the freedom and flexibility one gets when staying in an apartment. And it's so convenient to stay in an apartment with everything provided for. I appreciate especially the washing machine as I travel light and I need to launder my clothing. Besides, one gets to communicate personally with Curtis and he has been great. He was most prompt in handling all my mails and requests.
Very completely supplied with excellent instructions. Quiet street and quiet and very secure building. Owner and local management co. quick to respond. Good wireless access. The owner has put great thought into the design and furnishings of the apt. and we enjoyed the effort. Location is great, close to public transportation, easy hailing of taxis and in an area with diversity of stores and residences. Wonderful area to walk to get the feel of how people live in Kyoto. Going west will take you to the Kamo river, from there you have many choices to explore the shopping, restaurants, Gion etc. NE will give you many temples shrines. We have rented apartments in many places in the world and this is absolutely a first-rate experience, akin to having close designer friends letting you stay in their place.
we had 4 1/2 days in Kyoto and i can not imagine a more outstanding place to stay than the gion apt. It had everything in a very efficient apartment. It was clean, beautiful and so incredibly convenient to everything one could want. We rented bikes and could keep them there. We made breakfast each morning in our apt. We loved every minute of it and felt like it was our home away from home. we would HIGHLY recommend this VRBO as THE place to stay in Kyoto!
After leaving Tokyo, we traveled to Kyoto to stay for a week in this apartment. The photos and description are accurate - safe, clean, and everything you need to enjoy your time in Kyoto. The location was perfect as there was a subway and bus stop within short walking distance - we hopped on the subway many times to get to temples and to go out to dinner (there are restaurants near apartment however one stop away is the area with many bars and restaurants - which is nice because the apartment is in a quieter location). We used cab from Kyoto station upon arrival which worked out perfect, but not necessary again (although available easily one block away). The self checkin and checkout was seamless and communication prior to arrival was all good. I love VRBO and have had many great experiences - this was another one to add to that list.
When we travel we try to rent apartments and this one was recommended to us by friends from Australia. It was ideally situated. It's tiny, but, as it turns out it's the same size as the first apartment that my wife and I lived in 40 years ago, so, we were quite comfortable. Dishes, pots and pans, washing machine, steps to the metro or buses, supermarket nearby, restaurants. From here we could either walk anywhere we wanted or travel easily by bus or metro. Two weeks wasn't enough. What more could one want (more time).
We stayed for 8 nights. The location was excellent and it was the perfect place for us to stay with our 3 year old in Kyoto. The small condo had everything we needed and was very clean and generally well thought out. My only slight recommendation is that it would have been nice to have had some low lighting in the bedroom area so we would not disturb our daughter sleeping in the living room area. Having a kitchen helped us to keep costs down and we bought food most days from the 7 eleven around the corner (not at all like 7 Elevens in UK!). The lift was appreciated as we had a pram. We would definitely stay there again next time we are in Kyoto and have already recommended it to many of our friends here in KL.
everything was just perfect ! The location is great, close to the main streets but still very quiet, so you have access to all of the shops and launch point for sightseeing, as well as to the iconic Kiyomizu-dera. The apartment itself is modern, simple and very comfortable, especially after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. You'll get all of the amenities too, including a high-tech bathroom, washer/dryer and speedy WiFi. It is a very comfortable home, with all the western facilities. You can buy and prepare your meals, and eat the food you like if you don't want to eat Japanese food all the time. We will come again for sure ! Highly recommended.
This apartment we stayed at for 5 nights was perfect for us both. It lies at the doorstep of the KiyoMizu-Dera precinct, which is a must-visit for anyone taking a trip there to Kyoto. It is amazing that such a short walk will lead one up to the temple itself, and cutting across it will bring the traveller to the main Gion street. If you're able-bodied, all this is accessible by foot. As for the apartment itself, it is secure, and extremely well-appointed. Everything you could possibly want, is in it. There is even a automated intercom system in the living room to announce that your hot waterbath is ready!
This is a great apartment in an ideal location. Right off of Gojo-dori, so taxis are a snap to hail. An easy walk to Shijo-dori, so you have access to all of the shops and launch point for sightseeing, as well as to the iconic Kiyomizu-dera. The apartment itself is modern, simple and very comfortable, especially after a long day of sightseeing and shopping. You'll get all of the amenities too, including a high-tech bathroom, washer/dryer and speedy WiFi. We loved that the apartment was in Gion, with temples and picturesque streets so close by. Highly recommend.
Our second stay at the Gion Apartments was as good as the first stay 18 months ago. The apartment is well appointed, comfortable, clean and in a great location in Kyoto. It makes a great base from which to explore by foot as well as being close to train and bus lines. If you want to shop and cook instead of dining out, everything you need is in the kitchen. Beats staying in a hotel any day.
We stayed in the Gion Apartment for 5 nights in November 2013, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. I would highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit Kyoto. It is well-located in central Kyoto on a quiet street with easy access to major bus lines, just down the hill from the Kiyomizudera Temple. The neighborhood was ideal, offering easy access to some major sights as well as back streets that were fun to explore. I'm only sorry we didn't have longer there. The apartment is very pleasant with comfortable beds, and while it is not large by American standards, it felt like we had plenty of room. It is just as described on the website, clean and beautifully maintained, and the check in procedure was easy and efficient. I particularly enjoyed the soaking tub and found soaking in hot water the perfect way to relax and soothe sore muscles after a day of sight seeing. If we are fortunate enough to return to Kyoto, I would definitely stay there again.
We just spent 8 nights at Gion apartments with our 7 month old baby and were impressed the moment we opened the door. The apartment was modern, clean and exactly what we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment is compact but very well laid out. Being able to self cater and do laundry as needed was particularly useful when travelling with our son, as was being able to close the bedroom sliding doors so he could nap in peace. The apartment is in a really lovely area, and we spent many afternoons just exploring the narrow streets, coffee shops and temples nearby. I would highly recommend this to anyone planning on spending time in this lovely city.
The apartments are exactly as described I've stayed here twice and can't fault ease of booking, payment and entry. The location is terrific with plenty close by to do and see, station, post office close by and a lovely teahouse just around the corner on Gojo Dori. Supermarket up the road if you care to eat in and fabulous shrine to explore on the way to shops in Gion. Apartment has all amenities, clean and compact. Strongly recommend as a base to explore Kyoto
My friend and I exhaled when we opened the door to this apartment. Considering what we'd come from in Tokyo, this was heaven! For Japan, it is a spacious apartment, especially for two people. We loved how modern and clean it was. And the closet space can't be beat - we fully unpacked and that is a luxury! The bathroom was extra nice because the toilet is separate from the shower/bath and sink area. The washer/dryer was nice to have too. And having a kitchen table to sit and enjoy breakfast and coffee was lovely. We found the beds to be very comfortable and the air conditioning easy to use. Everything about this apartment was convenient other than the fact that our cab driver had a hard time finding it. But we found that quite normal in Japan - and part of the fun is going on a little adventure to find a place. I would absolutely book this place again and plan to in the future.
The owner and his assistant have the self-check-in system down to a pure art! The information sent was complete, accurate and very helpful. Information regarding travel from Kansai airport was invaluable and made our late arrival a piece of cake. Access to the apartment was also made easy by the clarity of the instructions and the unit was clean, comfortable and precisely as pictured. My only comment on the unit we stayed in is that it is a bit dark, so if you plan to have a rest day, be forewarned - as it is a ground floor unit, there is little light in the day. Having said that, it is a great location just an easy walk through the neighbourhood or along the riverbank to the bustle of the tourist areas. The surrounding streets lead you past wonderful little shops and several temples and the immediate neighbourhood is very quiet. There is a 7/11 with all the basics for sale just a few minutes walk away. We used taxis rather than public transit and had no problem whatsoever finding one. The map of the apartment location that is provided was extremely useful in being able to communicate with the taxi drivers. All in all, a wonderful stay in a great little apartment and, although we did not make it to the local bath house, there is a lovely soaker tub right there in the apartment. Oh yes, one other thing is that the people we encountered in the building itself were all friendly and helpful. Many thanks to the owner for being so organized and so honest!
My teenage daughter and I were there for 3 weeks and totally enjoyed our stay! The owner in the US was very responsive in communicating. It was great that the co-owner was in Kyoto to contact when necessary. I had to contact her regarding a leak from the AC. She responded quickly and got a tem of electricians to fix it. The location was very convenient: 5 min. walk to a train station. 8 min. walk to bus stops. There were 3 convenient stores in 3 to 5 min walking distance! It's off a busy street so you won't hear outside noise so much. Oh, a post office with ATMs is across the street. There's a supermarket in 15 min walk. We walked to the Gion area/downtown every day. It's such a pleasant walk. We got to explore the neighborhood quite a bit and it was wonderful. The beds were comfortable and it was nice to have a love sofa and a small table and chairs. It was great to have a kitchen and all the necessary utensils. I cooked some simple meals quite often. It's hard to eat out all the time when you are traveling. I also did the laundry almost everyday. The place was very well equipped and was clean. I would definitely stay at Gion Apartments again when I visit Kyoto.
We booked this apartment based on the other good reviews here. Being in Australia I was a little unsure about dealing with an owner in the USA for an apartment in Japan but Curtis was a pleasure to deal with. Great communication and he always followed through as he indicated he would. It was easy to get a taxi direct from Kyoto Station for less than ¥1000 which was well worth it. We hailed one driving past the unit when we were leaving as well. Otherwise we walked everywhere or mainly caught buses and trains. Check in was exactly as advised. The neighborhood felt very safe and was quiet. It was very hot when we were there so having air con to come home to was great. Highlights worth seeking out were the little sake shop on the right hand side of the street where the apartment is situated heading towards the river where the little old lady who served us used an abacus (even though there were two vending machines directly outside we still went in), the Chinese restaurant on the corner just opposite the apartment and Santiago for a late night coffee and pasta on a Monday night when most things seemed to be closed. Turn left on the main road near the apartment and walk past the overpass - it will be on your left. There are also several pottery shops near Santiago, some were very reasonably priced. Overall a wonderful stay in Kyoto and will recommend this apartment as excellent value to anyone coming to Kyoto.
The apartment was as close to perfect as we could have hoped for! It was spacious, clean, safe, and conveniently located. The management was very well organized. It was closed to a metro station, and we could even walk to Kiyomizu-dera temple. There was a supermarket and a bakery within walking distance. The kitchen had all necessary pots, pans, and utensils. We stayed for ten days and we appreciated the washing machine, the air-conditioner, the balcony, and the big closet. We would highly recommend it!
My husband & I stayed here on our honeymoon in May 2013. We are no strangers to renting apartments on our vacations, with the first of our Japan trip being in Tokyo. I must say that this is one of the nicest apartments I have stayed in on a vacation. Everything is very new and extremely clean! It was lovely. I really appreciated all of the English translations on all of the appliances. We did our laundry, but for some reason I have having issues drying it (I think I left it in too long and all of the humidity of the washer made them feel wet again) so we just did as everyone else in Japan and hung them up outside! I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a place to stay in Kyoto. The best food is one subway stop up! Also check out the place on the main street that serves Takoyaki! It was the best we had in Japan!
I highly recommend this apartment, it was everything it promised to be, great location, affordable and good value. property well maintained and clean, quiet and cozy. I will be recommending this place to friends and family Thank you it was fabulous Gwen
The Gion Apartments provided an excellent base for our visit to Kyoto. The apartment we stayed in was exactly as described, and all of the appliances and furnishings were clean and worked well. We were very impressed at how easy it was to make the booking and, once in Kyoto, to find the building and to use the self-checkin system. The location is fine - we were able to walk to many of the places we wanted to visit, or find bus or train connections within walking distance. The apartment is small, and is most suited for two people. We were joined by a third person for the last three days, and found we had to juggle the bedding and luggage a little, but it didn't detract significantly from our stay. I would certainly recommend these apartments to anyone visiting Kyoto. It is much better than staying in a hotel if you are spending more than a few days in the city.
This is our second stay at these apartments after a 4 year lapse. Upon my daughter and son in-law deciding to wed in Kyoto it was an instant decision to book two apartments at Gion Apartments. My initial expectation on arrival was to expect the property to have some aged deterioration. Wrong! As per our first stay the apartments were clean, comfortable, the furnishings and the able appliances in excellent condition, with the new addition of free WiFi. If you are seeking an apartment that is quiet and secure, located close to convenient stores, restaurants, transport, ATM cash (Post Office within 100m) and your wanting to immerse and absorb local Japanese life and culture, be close to the CBD, look no further. To establish your booking and your queries you will find it a pleasure to deal with the owner who is prompt, clear and friendly in his communication. Nothing is a problem. Enjoy your stay at Gion Apartments; I know we will upon our inevitable return to beautiful Kyoto.
This apartment was perfect. The location was in close walking distance to many of the scenic places , including the beautiful Maruyama Koen and the world renowned Kiyomizuderu district. After dinner it was an easy walk into town to stroll down the narrow alleys and catch a glimpse of some maikos. And value for money. This place is rather inexpensive compared to many of the other listings. We both hate the cold but this place was well insulated and has heaters in both rooms. We are coming back.
I would like to recommend the apartment. It was very nice, cozy and functional. Our apartment was perfect for 2 people. The description in the advertisement is accurate, the photos reflect well the appearance of the apartment. The apartment was clean and very well maintained. The owner and contact person Junko were very helpful. They described very well how to get to the apartment and what was the best way to get there. In the apartment we found lot of information about Kyoto itself, the nearest supermarket, restaurants etc. I would definitely recommend this apartment as a good start point for a journey around Kyoto.
My family and I stayed here over Christmas and it was fabulous! The apartment is centrally located and was the perfect home base for day trips around Kyoto too. It was great to have a kitchen and washer and dryer. The neighborhood has excellent restaurants within walking distance. In fact a couple of them are over a hundred years old (Oden and Kinnabe). It was our first time to book an apartment rental for family travel and the owners made the process seamless and easy. We will stay there on our next visit!
I am happy to recommend the Gion Apartments. My partner and I stayed a week and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The location was great and easy to find. The apartment was a nice and big, larger than all other hotels of similar price in Japan. The kitchen, washing, dryer, aircon and tv all worked well. Great location near everything you could need, 24 hour convinience store, izakayas, post office with international ATM, subway and lots more... The photos on the website are a true representation of the apartment. I have looked at the other reviews and agree with everything good they are saying. Would highly recommend and hope to stay there again in the future!
This is the fourth time we've stayed at this apartment. That alone should tell you we consider it our home away from home for our yearly Kyoto trips. It is extremely convenient to bus/train/subway stops. Delightful local shops and restaurants nearby. Several small temples and shrines in the general neighborhood, and the Kawai Kanjiro house is only 10 minutes away on foot. There is a nearby post office that includes an ATM (English language available). The kitchen is nicely equipped for fixing meals, and the washer/dryer means a carry-on bag is all we ever need for clothes. Be sure to read the binder that contains all sorts of helpful information about the neighborhood, including a wonderful small grocery. The few times we requested something, it was delivered either the same day or no later than the next. Terrific apartment. We can't imagine staying anywhere else.
Three of us stayed at Gion's apartment Room 105 in Nov for 5 nights. Everything is perfect, except the cooking pot and pan. We will stay here again if we visit Kyoto again (but we will bring our own pot). I would rate it 9.5 out of 10. If it were not for the pot/pan, I would give it a perfect 10.
We really enjoyed our stay in Kyoto at the Gion Apartments. They are modern, clean and well equipped apartments offering everything you need for a stay in Kyoto. They are very secure and quiet and allowed us to really relax in between our sightseeing excursions. A short walk to a modern supermarket allowed us to get all the supplies we needed and just a casual stroll up to the main Gion area if we went out for dinner. Only minor complaint was our apartment did not have a toaster and lacked some kitchen utensils. We would certainly return to the Gion Apartments on our next trip to Kyoto.
Have stayed here three times. It is modern, convenient and comfortable. Each time we stay we discover more little shops and restaurants in the small streets around the apartment. We hope to be back!!!
Excellent property. Very clean and modern.Close to train station and the Gion district.Other tourist sites also close by including eating houses. Supermarket and 7 eleven also close by. Secure block of apartments. Recommended
We stayed at unit #105 for five nights in November. The unit was spotless and included anything we might have wished for. Everything went very smoothly, the automatic check in and check out worked well. We used the recommended Yasaka Taxi for transfer from Kansai, and at 8pm we were actually the only riders getting a private direct transfer to the apartment. The location is very convenient, we used mostly the bus system, their daily free ride tickets (500 Yens) were very convenient. We would walk a couple of blocks east on Gojo dori to Higashi oji dori to catch buses to Gion and northeast, and a similar distance to the west on Kawaramachi dori there are several lines going to center and northwest. I would recommend the Gion apartments without any hesitation, we would be delighted to visit again.
My parents and I stayed in this apartment during our recent visit. I must say, it is an ideal location for anyone who wants to stay near the attractions. Kiyomizu is really just 10mins walk away and buses run to the other attractions as well. Learning pottery as a hobby, I was pleasantly surprised that the place is surrounded by pottery shops and even a museum! The apartment is kept very clean and as shown in the photos. Space is more than enough for 3 and is ideal for a family with small kids. Cooking utensils are provided and you can even find a rice cooker! The supermarket is nearer than what is shown on the map therefore you should definitely take a nice walk to check out Japanese groceries! Stop by the bakery on the way to the supermarket and be greeted by a nice elderly couple who even gave us a free bun. Visit the "Rokuharamitsuji Temple" ( ??????which is also nearby, where the second son of the emperor Daigo Kuya became a Buddhist monk. It is not a big temple, visited mostly by the locals but may be of interest for Buddhist visitors. Owner is very responsive and helpful with any inquiries. I will definitely rent this apartment again if I go back to Kyoto with my family.
Nice, small apartment. Super clean. Short walk to Gion and very close to the subway. Big fridge. Fast internet. Only possible complaint was the TV had only about 5 japanese channels, but who watches TV while they are in Kyoto?!? Thanks Curtis!
Great location in a residential street close to restaurants, Kyomizu temple, tourist area of Gion but not in it, and 10 mins by taxi or an easy half hour work to main Kyoto train station. Apartment is so quiet, with everything you need. Would certainly recommend to others.
Kyoto is an amazing city, and even more beautiful to visit in the Fall: it is recommended to walk around, and staying at Gion Apartments -- in the East side of the city (full of temples and character) -- made a big difference. During our one-week staying, we only took the undergroung train twice (it was raining!) Otherwise, we were able to stroll almost everywhere, and enjoy the sightseeing. From dining to shopping options, the location is remarkable. In terms of in&out transportation, it is an unexpensive, 10 minutes taxi cab ride from the main train station. The apartment is fully furnished, cozy, quiet and and very clean. The self check-in/check-out was easy and fast. On-site personnel are kind and helpful. Great lodging option, suitable for singles, or a couple, even with a little child!
The apartment was excellent both in terms of facilities and location. Access to subway or trains was close by. The apartment was cost and very quiet. After a hectic day of traveling and exploring Kyoto the opportunity to have a long hot bath was a welcoming aspect of returning to the apartment. We would definitely recommend this accommodation to any traveller.
was impressed with the apartment. it's definitely spacious compared to other japanese hotel rooms! great amenities provided. location is nice and in the quiet part of gion, but it's just a 5 mins bike ride away from all of the action! so the bike hire service provided with the apartment is definitely handy to get around kyoto. will stay here again and highly recommended!
Very comfortable, clean apartment to come home to after sightseeing. We stayed for a week with 3 people and were very comforable. It was great having a washer available. Location makes it easy to get to bus or subway and there were lots of restaurants nearby. I'd stay here again.
This apartment was very comfortable and had all the amenities you could want. It was a great place to come back to after a full day of sight seeing and walking around town. It's in a very quaint neighborhood and is a simple, clean, and elegant apartment with a small kitchen, wi-fi, A/C, full bath, comfortable beds and a couch. We really enjoyed staying here!
Curtis and Junko are extremely patient and very informative, lovely. Loved the self-check in procedure, useful since we arrived at around 10pm. Nicely furnished apartment with all the necessary essentials. Made use of the range on nights when we wanted to eat in, was like living at home! Great location as well, with close access to popular sights. Will stay here again when we come back to Kyoto!
Very clean and well maintained. A comfortable stay at a reasonable price. Within walking distance of train station, the major shopping street, tasty restaurants, and temples. Remember to print out map and instructions prior to arrival as it can be a little hard to find at first.
very comfortable, clean and well equipped, the excellent location being within walking distance of all the delights of Gion and some of the most significant temple districts and within cab of bike distance of most others, no shortage of nearby dining experiences of all types. My husband and I stayed 10 to 12 days the last two springtimes and will do so again. Excellent arrangements and help from Curtis and Junko. Ideal for tuning into the delightful Kyoto style and aesthetic, the smallish local supermarket is like a mini Harrods food hall, and the lovely walk to it includes passing a lovely temple.
We stayed in unit 103 two years ago and this time in 203. We enjoyed the earlier stay but the 203 was laid out quite a bit differently and we liked it better. It's really the same size as 103 but because the beds are laid out against the patio window it seems to open up more space. The location of this rental is really terrific. We could walk to many many things, and it was very easy to catch a bus or even the subway or train when we needed that. The buses in Kyoto are very foreign friendly and we found we used them more than anything else for getting around. The apartment itself is clean and modern and easy to use. We never asked for any help as everything just fell into place. We will be back and can recommend it highly to anyone.
We were 3 and had a very pleasant stay in this apartment last november. It is quiet and well situated, from there we could walk to interesting spots, and once the bus system understood, it was even better ! The place is very clean and well equiped, and it was a pleasure to come back "home" after a long day of wandering in the streets and temples. We would -did- recommend it to anyone willing to have a nice time in Kyoto !
We enjoyed staying in this department, which is an easy walk to stores, restaurants, temples, buses, the river, and both downtown Kyoto and the Gion neighborhood. The manager left us tourist maps and a bus guide -- hugely helpful because we took buses all over the city to see the beautiful temples. Checking in was easy, and the apartment was very convenient because it included a kitchen and washer/dryer.
We just completed our second 3-week stay at the Gion Apartments. The apartment was as described and perfectly met our needs. Its location provides easy access to bus and train stops. Several temples and shrines are within walking distance, and there are many tempting shops as well. The Happy Raku supermarket is less than a 10 minute walk and offers a great selection of virtually anything you need. Three convenience stores are only 2 blocks away for last-minute purchases. Lovely quiet neighborhood worth an afternoon's stroll to discover local shops and restaurants. A large post office is nearby that includes an ATM in the lobby; the 7-11 across the street from the post office does as well. Handy current editions of the Kyoto Visitors guide, bus and city maps were awaiting our arrival. The washer/dryer is easy to operate and instructions were clearly marked with English labels. Be sure to read the renter's guide in the apartment as it provides very good information to make your stay even more enjoyable. We will continue referring friends to the Gion Apartments and be sure to stay there on our next trip to Kyoto. Thank you to everyone on the Gion team for making our stay so comfortable.
Merci Curtis
Excellent location near bus stop and rail access. Convenient to post office, ATM, grocery, fruit/veggie market, convenience stores and within easy walking distance to the major Kiyomizu Dera temple. Many pottery shops are nearby as well as a shop carrying high quality clothing woven by local artisans. The Japanese style bathtub was wonderful for soaking tired muscles after a day of on foot sight seeing. The kitchen was well equipped and we were delighted to find the same rice cooker we use at home. The building manager was extremely helpful in arranging for an important Fed Ex delivery on our behalf as well as assisting in acquisition of Japanese cooking utensils we desired. Well maintained property and apartment. We appreciated the security features and quiet neighbourhood. Would rent again ourselves or recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Kyoto.
We had a wonderful stay at the appts. It was walking distance to the subway and the Gion district. It was quiet and comfortable at night. There was generous space for 2. The contact person, Curtis, was very helpful to us new comers to Kyoto. The internet worked perfectly, which was important to us. I strongly recommend the Omi beef market down the street! I would definetly stay here again.
Location: The location is very good. The nearest train station is only three blocks away. Note that not all trains stop at this particular station, though (some express trains skip it). The apartment is close enough to most attractions to making taking a taxi an attractive option. Apartment itself: The apartment is beautiful and very spacious (for two people). All of the appliances and furniture are new and good quality. The kitchen and bathroom are great. The air conditioner works very well and is quiet. The couch fits two people and is comfy enough. The television has a few channels that can be fun to flip through late at night. Small but useful items, such as tape, scissors, notepads, and stationary are included. The bicycles were nice, but we only used them three times during our eight day stay. The beds are decent, not the most comfortable, but sufficient. Make sure the mattress is not upside down though. My girlfriend's mattress was incredibly uncomfortable until we realized she was sleeping on the wrong side. Management should tell the cleaning staff that the mattresses are not reversible and that they should check that the mattresses are the correct way when cleaning. One of the sheets also had something on that that really made it seem as though it had not been either washed or switched since the last guests. Switching the sheet ourselves was not a problem though. Other than those two issues the apartment was perfect. Management: I lost my cellphone in a taxi and the management really did a fantastic job helping me get it back! They called the center responsible for the lost and found of all cab companies in Kyoto. They also provided me directions to the nearest police station, which eventually led to me getting my phone back. The Japanese people are incredibly honest and kind. Thank you to everyone who helped me recover my phone. We had no regrets staying at this apartment. It was very nice and we certainly would stay here again.
The apartment was spotlessly clean, quiet, spacious, and in a great location. Close to the Gion area, running paths, train stations, shops and restaurants. Surrounding neighbourhood was clean, safe and well maintained. The self check-in procedure was simple and clear. We would highly recommend this apartment!
We stayed in Gion apartments for 6 nights. We found it extremely comfortable and convenient. Everything was there. We walked around local streets to great cafes and shops. It was very close to transport and extremely quiet. After a busy day of visiting temples, galleries and shops we found it a wonderful recluse. I have recommended this apartment to several friends who are thinking of visiting Japan. We would definitely stay again as our visit to Kyoto remains one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in Japan.
This is a comfortable, well-kept, spotlessly clean and convenient apartment in central Kyoto. We were really happy there and wouldn’t think twice about staying in the apartment again. The location was ideal for us. It’s the only area of Kyoto that’s within walking distance of the eastern temples, downtown, and the train station at the same time. That keeps the whole city feeling connected, and it was important for us for taking daytrips by train to Osaka and Nara. We had easy access to public transportation within Kyoto, but didn’t have to rely on it and usually just walked. On the other hand, the building is on a little side street in a pleasant residential neighborhood, and we felt like we were really living in the city, not in a generic touristy area or clump of hotels. The apartment is thoughtfully laid out. Sliding screen doors give the option of having it be one large space or closing off the sleeping area. The kitchen is fully equipped, the toilet and bath/shower have separate entrances, the mattresses were great for sleeping and had clean, crisp white bedding, and our unit had a nice balcony. Being able to cook for ourselves made a big difference, especially with a supermarket nearby, and the washer and dryer were good to have. The apartment is a little on the smaller side, but not cramped the way accommodations in Japan often are. We easily fit in a third person for part of our stay. The customer service was great from start to finish. Curtis and his associate Junko answered every question, sent us user-friendly maps and directions that made it easy to find and get into the apartment, and had a bunch of maps and useful information waiting for us there. They were professional but also more than professional. One of us left an ipod and a pair of nice studio headphones there, and they found them, kept them for a friend of ours to pick up for us, shipped them to us when he didn’t make it to pick them up, and when the package was blocked by Japanese customs because of the battery in the ipod, Curtis brought it to the US in his own luggage for us. That’s part of what got me to write this review. This a great place to stay anyway, but Curtis goes out of his way to keep it that way. I would recommend it to anyone.
We loved staying at the Gion Apartments. We were there for 2 weeks and rented 2 apartments for the 4 of us. These well-designed modern apartments are clean, spacious, tastefully decorated and super comfortable. They are advertised as studios but they are essentially one-bedroom apartments. When my son was sleeping and I was up, I would simply slide the doors between the bedroom and the living room areas. There was a ton of storage, so we were able to unpack, stay organized, and live comfortably without frequently stepping all over our luggage. Initially, I was concerned about feeling claustrophobic in a studio, but these apartments are well-laid out and spacious. It was the perfect place to rest and relax after long days of walking. Although we had 2 apartments, all 4 of us were able to hang out comfortably in one apartment. We have special-needs children, so we did quite a bit of cooking and really appreciated the well-equipped kitchen with the full-size refrigerator. It was also great having the modern washer/dryer combo in the apartment. I am very particular about cleanliness and I have to say that the apartment was very clean. We have stayed in many different resorts (such as the Westin, Fairmont, etc) in the US and other countries, and we the find the Gion Apartments to be just as comfortable and lovely (except without the resort amenities, such as a swimming pool, but you also pay a fraction of the cost of the fancy resorts). We had looked into renting the Citadines Apartments but they never responded to my email inquiry. However, our friends from Japan ended up staying there, and when I visited, I was really glad that I did not stay there. It had a nice modern décor, but it was very cramped. There was no sitting area, and when we visited, we had to all sit on the beds. The Gion apartments has a sofa, ottoman and coffee table, and also a dining table with two chairs. I cannot thank Curtis enough for his prompt responses to my many questions that ranged from getting from the airport to the apartment to finding a swimming pool for the kids. Curtis was always honest, responsive, helpful and very pleasant to deal with. If you do not speak Japanese, you will find that dealing with someone who speaks English is a big plus when you are trying to make arrangements for your trip. Even the appliances and light switches are labeled in English for your convenience. The apartment even has a folder with practical information on the l
Really good apartments and quite roomy. We are International travelers for many years and have stayed in all manner of places from 5 star to "cheap charlies" - we would call this tops - we loved our stay - the apartment was clean, neat with comfortable beds, cosy living area, fantastic bathroom and good kitchenette. The location could not have been better - in the heart of Kyoto which is also a wonderful city with such a great deal to do. Within a10 minutes everything was available from bank, post office, mini-market etc walking through the cutest lane ways. To quote Arnie Schwarzenegger and General MacArthur - we will be back/ we will return.
In summury: once arrived we found this flat dirty, smelly pillows, linen and matresses soaked with sweat, kitchen closets and plates were dirty, dust everywhere, you could see everywhere (on doors, closets etc.) the finghertips of previous guests, the washing/dryer machine was full of hair and lint of previous guests. These words are enought: pictures speak for themselves. Even if from the first day we asked for cleaning, the owner didn't care and was only able to take time. In fact we paid all in advance (and in the contract it was written: "the apartement will be professionally cleaned").The owner lives in Usa and has a clerk in Kyoto. The only thing his clerk did was able to do was: take the dirtiest pillow, put it in the closet (ready for next guests?!?) and replace it with a less dirty pillow taken from the same closet. We stayed there 6 days and he should have all the time to clean the flat or, at least, provided us clean pillows and linen. At the end we had to clean the house and buy new linen: what a bad experience!
Owner Response
I'm sorry for the discomfort caused you during your stay with us last year. Cleanliness is one of our highest priorities, and in addition to regularly replacing pillows and mattresses, we inspect each unit regularly to make sure the cleaners are doing their job, particularly since this incident. I hope from looking at other feedback comments, you can see that we have a very good reputation for cleanliness and quick response to customer needs. I’m very sorry that wasn’t the case for your stay. We really do care about each and every guest. -Curtis
Both of us would like to agree with all the other positive comments. We stayed 9 nights and had a fantastic experience. The local area is great and a good base for seeing Kyoto. Although one could never go hungry (even prepared food from the local supermarket is excellent) the very efficient kitchen was handy to have. Everything else about the apartment worked just as you would like it to. Thanks Curtis and we hope to be back soon.
We were very impressed with the Gion Apartments. The location was ideal. The apartment was very clean. It slept 3 adults comfortably. The kitchen was very useful. We cooked our breakfast each morning. The bathroom and the shower room were clean and the water was hot.. The washer and dryer worked perfectly. The building is very secure, not that we needed security. The apartment location was convenient to bus and subway and train stations. The post office is at the end of the street about a block away from the apartment where one can find an international ATM. We found neigborhood convenient marts within walking distance and resturaunts also. We even found a big and tall mens store just a few blocks away. We were very lucky to have spent our time during the peak cherry blossom. This added so much more to our Kyoto experience. Curtice and his staff were very friendly and infomative, We would stay at this apartment again. Without question, the Gion Apartment was a center piece to our most enjoyable trip to Kyoto.
We found this place on the internet, but by coincidence, one of our neighbours had also stayed in this very apartment a few months previous, so she had highly recommended it to us. She stayed here with her husband and two small children. We came as husband and wife, with our 24 year-old son. It is not large enough for 4. We stayed here for 11 days and found the apartment to be well-equipped and very clean, as this is important to me. There were no disappointments. It is compact, as is all things in Japan, but definitely all that we could need, including the washing machine, which was very handy to have on a holiday. My husband loved the heated toilet seat! LOL! The location is also very convenient for shopping and transportation, and on the days that we decided to walk to the central Kyoto train station, it took us 30 minutes to get there. The neighbourhood is quiet and there are many convenience stores on the main street from which we could buy milk and juice. For larger groceries, we walked to the supermarket nearby, or bought food in the basement of the main department stores such as iSetan, at the central train station. It is not easy to find restaurants that are vegetarian such as we needed, so we had to do all the cooking at the apartment. One nearby Nepalese restaurant was closed when we went there one evening, and they keep irregular hours, so we had to give up the idea of eating out. I know there is a vegetarian place near downtown, but when evening came, we'd be too tired to trek elsewhere. For the 3 of us, taxis cost less than taking a bus to get to certain short distances, but we do recommend buying the all-day bus pass, as well as the JR Japan rail pass for Kansai (which must be bought outside the country before you arrive). It costs less than the one-way ticket from Osaka airport to Kyoto. The owner, Curtis supplied us with a notebook filled with tips, how to operate the appliances, where to go, where to buy food, where to eat out, etc. Very helpful and it made our trip so much easier, especially for people who can't understand Japanese. Curtis is polite and answered all our questions promptly. Curtis even supplied us with a great guide book, Lonely Planet's "Japan". The rates are reasonable compared to staying in a ryokan or a hotel. Other travellers that we met during a walking tour did not have as good accommodations and price as we did. Over all, we would definitely stay here again & would highly recommend this place to others.
This apartment was planned with care. It is thoughtfully furnished for both style and convenience. The location, on a small, mostly residential street in the center of the city is hard to beat. I would stay here again, and recommend it without hesitation.
These apartments are wonderfully maintained and in a great location. Quiet, clean, modern, and comfortable. Close to a good running / bike path along the river, as well as within comfortable walking distance of temples, restaurants, shopping, post office, and grocery store. I've stayed twice now, once with my husband and once on a recent trip with my parents and brother -- the apartments were a big hit with everyone.
We were wrapped to again be able to stay in Gion apartment during our recent trip to Kyoto. It was lovely returning to a familiar place! Curtis was again very easy to deal with and very accommodating. Two days before we left home we changed travel plans so we could visit Kyoto. Curtis was able to confirm our accommodation and send the required information before we left home. Gion Apartments are a great base to see Kyoto from. They are comfortable and have all the kitchen equipment you need. Thank you again.
This is my second time and stay in one of the Curtis's Gion apartment. This apartment is perfect for two people. Great location, walking distant to Kiyomizu-Dera temple. I love Kyoto and love to stay there again in next year.
It is the second time I'm staying at this property. Since last time Curtis have added a small dinner table and big water heater + coffee filter machine + coffee grinder. Apartment is being well maintained and very clean. The only small thing we missed in it was a broom (however the vacuum was there). I'd recommend to add few hooks in the entrance area to hang light coat and bag.
My family stayed for 5 weeks in one of Curtis' Kyoto Modern Apartments and echo each and every one of the positive reviews written in comments. Great location, Curtis is the best of the best, clean/modern, quiet....really.....great...great...great stay! Would go back in a heartbeat to the apartment and Kyoto.....fabulous time. Curtis' professional and courteous nature is exemplary!! Thank you for being so kind in all our transactions and taking the time to travel back to the temple to purchase and mail to me the one last souvenir I forgot to bring home! Thank was so very, very kind of you!! Thank you!!! Your'e the best!!!!
My partner and I had a wonderful time at the Gion apartment, where we stayed for a week in the middle of August. In those hot summer months it's a fantastically cool and spacious apartment (I was amazed at the size, for Japan!) The help and instructions from the owner were perfect for finding the apartment (a short taxi ride from Kyoto station), and 'check in' was very straightforward. Having been in Japan for a fortnight moving from hotel to hotel, it was nice to have a place that felt like home for a week. It's really close to some great attractions such as Kiomizudera and the Sanjusangendo temples (neither of which are more than a half an hour walk away, and both of which are spectacular) and the walk to the Gion 'entertainment district' is very short too. Perhaps the best spot is walking up the west bank of the river, full of nice restaurants and shops. I'd particularly recommend 'efish', which is just over the bridge west of the apartment. I don't think the apartment could be better located, or more thoughtfully put together. I wouldn't hestiate to recommend the Gion apartment to anyone.
These apartments are exactly as described. They are well equipped with everything you need including a good range of cooking utensils and everything works. They are spotlessly clean. You are close to many of the main attractions and it is possible to walk to many places. the metro is nearby and easy to use. We very much appreciated the excellent 'book of the house' which provided all those important details like where to buy groceries or find an English language newspaper. I would highly recommend these well priced apartments.
I was delighted with my May 2010 stay at the Gion apartments. The location between the forested hills and the river, near station and bus stops was excellent as was the ambience of the area ( lots of small shops & businesses plus being the pottery locality). The apartment was bigger than what I had been led to believe, was secure, very clean and contained numerous unanticipated "extras", e.g. washing detergent powder & pegs, umbrellas. We three appreciated being able to close the sliding doors between the beds and the living area, for privacy. There was plenty of warm bedding and the heating system A/C worked well. Every appliance was well designed and the hot bath was good for aching muscles and bidet toilet was fun. The kitchen was much better than the one I have at home…I can recommend the nearby Lawson chain store (on Gojo Dori before the bridge) rather than the supermarket, it was a lot cheaper. Having the Post Office handy was another advantage for both accessing the ATM and getting stamps for postcards. I am recommending Gion Apartments to others who are interested in going to Kyoto. Would go back there any day.
After spending a week at a crowded hotel in Tokyo it was so nice to unwind at the Gion Apartment. When we arrived there was a mix up with the lock box but we called Junko on her cell and she was there in 15 minutes. The apartments were clean and organized, providing everything that you would need for your stay in Kyoto. The location was excellent, a short walk up the road into the Gion section of town. Taxis were always driving by so we never had to wait to get a cab. I would highly recommend this location to anyone from a couple to a family.

This comfortable studio apartment was our base to enjoy Kyoto in mid-April. The unit is well located - close to convenience stores, restaurants, a supermarket, the post office, the Keihan Gojo station, and a short walk across the bridge to the nearest bus stop. We like the user-friendly check-in and check-out process, the very helpful information package, and the comfortable beds. The unit was well provisioned and generally clean, although the bath tub could stand some scrubbing. The kitchen facilities allowed us to prepare our usual light breakfasts, and home-style dinners consisting of heated take-out food paired with simply cooked vegetables or salads. As a side note, we were very impressed with the variety of take-out food - and its price - available in the supermarket, the food floors of the department stores, and some restaurants along Kawaramachi. We certainly would rent the studio again in any future visit to Kyoto.
We really enjoyed our stay at this appartment. The booking process was easy, and included a prompt and friendly contact with Curtis and Junko. Getting to the appartment also was easy because they helped us in getting into contact with the taxi company from the airport. The appartment was spacious and light, clean, it was quiet too, we heard no noise from the street. We stayed at the appartment for a month. It felt like home for us, with it’s fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The washer/dryer combo was ideal. And with our bikes we could easily cover the whole city to all sides easily in day trips, while the central places and the GION area is easily covered by foot. The instructions in the apartment where to find the nearby supermarket were also convenient. We definitely recommend this place.
We stayed 8 nights in gion apartment. Everything was up to ours expectation. Unit is great, exactly as advertised. Perfect for a great stay in kyoto : close grocery, ceramic shop, bus, and walking distance from kyomizu-dera. 20' walking from gion corner. Kitchen is fully equipped (microwave that toast !!) we made every day breakfast, beds are very confortable (but my only little criticims is don' t have king size bed but only twins beds). If we come back in kyoto i will stay again in gion apartement.
We stayed (family of 3) during Cherry Blossom Season and found this apartment to be well within reach of the train station, the bus stop and very close to the start of the longest and most breathtaking scenic walking tour we had ever experienced in our life! The apartment felt like a medium sized hotel room and was close enough in reality to the pictures on the net. Just remember that photos on the net are taken with a wide angle lens so you have to lower you expectation a little for how big you might perceive the place to be. You even get a water heater that talks to you and tells you when you are running low on hot water. The apartment was very clean and the amenities provided were more than sufficient for the duration of the stay. The bedding for the third person is good and provides enough comfort for sleeping on the floor. It was also good to have the free internet with cable provided. WASHING MACHINE: I must point out at this stage that it would be wise not to place too many items in the washer/dryer at once as it is made for much smaller washing loads! Best to only put a couple of shirts and some underwear in at one time and set it for the wash/dry cycle overnight as it takes about 4.5 hours to wash and dry. Your clothes will be a little crushed but the mini sized iron is superb. On arrival we found the folder with information about the area good and there were directions to the local supermarket. This place is great and we made some very simple Japanese dinners but getting some prepared Sashimi, tempura etc. We even made a salad and wok fried up some chicken and prepackaged veggies. You can also pick up fresh fruit at very reasonable prices. Although the supermarket is not that far away, if you want something even closer then just step out the front gate, go right up to the main road (about 15 meters) and then right again. Walk down for about 100m and you will find Circle K + 7 Eleven + Lawsons 100 Yen shop. The choice at these places it not as great though and there is very minimal fresh produce. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting a 'real' Kyoto experience and will one day return to our little oasis in Gi-on.
This is a great unit, exactly as advertised: new, spotless, perfect for a week's stay. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is fully-equipped and really convenient: we made breakfast here, and brought back take out from several places that we could heat up. If you want to do more serious cooking (no real baking though) you will not have a problem. There is a microwave that toasts ( a new experience for us, from the US). My only criticism is that it is a bit bland: one of those 1000¥ kimono from the flea market mounted on the wall would have made the difference between just another modern apartment, and a place that said "hey! you're in Kyoto!" There is a toilet room with that ne plus ultra of Japan, an electronic toilet seat that warms, washes and dries. The separate bath/laundry has a shower and soaking tub that fills with hot water and then heats further if you wish, after talking to you (sorry I don't understand Japanese). The unit is close to Kyomizu-dera, and a neighborhood of shops specializing in Kyoto ceramics. It is a healty walk to Kyoto Station or Gion proper (it is a little, if forgivable stretch to call this unit a Gion address.) Nevertheless, I would rent here again in an flash. There is a 7-11 a block away, a convenience for us from the US whose ATM cards don't work everywhere. Abut us: I like comfort, but don't need luxury. I like autonomy and am much happier in an apartment set-up than a place where I have to vacate for the staff to come in and do their thing. Since we are not particular about doing basic domestic tasks, this works perfectly for us.
We stayed in the Apartment for 1 week. It is very calm, clean and fully equipped with small kitchen, TV, and Internet access. The location is perfect, in walking distance to all the interesting sights in eastern Kyoto. In just 10 minutes you can walk to the famous Hanamikochi street. We can surely recommend this place. Junko was also very friendly and helped us with some advice.
We spent one week in Kyoto last February and we really enjoyed our stay at Gion apartment. Very clean, quiet, and equiped enough to cook. Good location, near a metro station and other facilities. We won't hesitate to recommand that place.
I recently stayed solo at Gion Apartments for over a week. Very quiet, clean, comforable, and convenient living space. Appreciated washer and dryer as this was my second week in Kyoto. Don't miss the National Treasures in the temple complex en route to the grocery store (see map in apartment). One of the reasons I was interested in this particular apartment was mention in previous comments re many ceramics stores nearby. This is accurate and I have the pottery to show for it! One note: the only place my U.S. Cirrus ATM card worked was at main post office, where I could withdraw up to my card limit, i.e., equivalent of USD 300. Nice walk. I hope to return to this apartment soon--much more to see in and around Kyoto.
Our stay in Gion Apartments has now got me thinking about using serviced apartments rather than hotels as is our wont. Having said that, I am not sure if there are too many serviced apartments like this out there. To start with, the location is great - in Gion, 10 minutes walk from the subway, 15 minutes walk to the Kiyomizu Dera temple, 15 minute walk to Gion Corner. The apartment is just right sized for upto 2 adults and 2 kids or 3 adults. Impeccably clean with parquette floors which make walking with socks even in cold weather not an ordeal, well laid out, kichenette stocked with everything you would want for a meal. There is a Japan Rough Guide along with a booklet of instructions to facilities in the room (ours did not have the English translation of the A/c but that seemed to be a bug as it apparently is normally added to the booklet - we ended up pressing various buttons daily before getting it right). Communication before our travels was timely and quick and the self check in is easy. As we were in transit, Ayako very kindly accommodated our Takyubin service as well. Definitely a must stay place again.
We had a wonderful stay in Kyoto and really enjoyed the comfort and convenience of the Gion apartments. It was, we felt, the perfect location to stay in Kyoto, and the apartment itself was fantastic! Clean and cozy, with all the modern conveniences you would need. (Loved the bath & toilet - high tech!). An easy walk into the main area of Gion, approx 10-15min and plenty of places to eat are close by. Self check in and out was super easy and as others have mentioned here, you can tell the kind of people Curtis and Ayako are just by their emails....Friendly & Helpful :) Thanks so much to you both! We look forward to returning to Japan sometime in the future and we will definately looking to stay at the Gion apartments.
This is the second time we've stayed in one of Curtis's apartments, and yet again we were not disappointed. This time we stayed for a week for our son's wedding which was held in Kyoto. We had everything we needed and the location was perfect and dead easy to get to sites of interest, shops etc. His descriptions are accurate so we felt confident in booking again. I recommend this apartment, but hope that it is free when we next return to Kyoto!!
We stayed at the Gion apartment for a week in November 2009. We absolutely loved it. Its location was conveniently close to a subway stop and we thought it was centrally located. We really enjoyed walking through the Gion neighborhood. The apartment itself was very clean and modern. It had everything we needed and it quickly felt like home. It was a great place to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. My wife and I have done a fair amount of traveling and we felt like we got a great deal and we were way more comfortable staying here for seven nights than we would have been in a hotel.
The apartment was much nicer than I expected. Everything was immaculate, the bathroom is quite large for a studio apartment, and everything was smartly laid out. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for cooking. The location is terrific, just a 5 minute walk to the Gojozaka bus stop. Kyoto has a fantastic bus system which calls out stops in Japanese and English, and the No. 100 bus stops at many of the major sites. I would highly recommend staying at this place.
we enjoyed very much staying in the apartment, great location, very comfortable, very clean and had all the amenities we required. Curtis and Ayako were very helpfull we highly recommend this place
My husband stayed at the Gion Apartments mid October. We were both impressed with the quality and presentation and size of the apartment. The pictures on the website lived up to expectation. It was great to know we had our apartment to come home to after our long days of sightseeing. So much better than staying in an hotel. The location was handy to all that we wanted - PO for ATM, convenience stores for quick pick up of necessities, subway lines and several temple complexes. All communication with Curtis was professional but friendly a pleasure to deal with. All in all a wonderful experience in a wonderful city. My only suggestion would be to include a dining table for meals.
My wife and I had a great stay in the Gion apartment. It's located a 10-minute walk south of Gion Corner. The facilities are modern and comfortable, and the building is quiet. Self check-in makes it easy to get your key. Great communications from Curtis and Ayako-- highly recommended!
Great apartment in excellent location in Gion/Kyoto. We stayed there with our two little kids (2+5) in July 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable and everything there that we needed. We will definitely stay there again.
We would highly recommend this apartment. It is very comfortable and in a great location. We loved the apartment, the location, and most of all, we loved our visit to Kyoto and the rest of Japan. Thank you so much for the wonderful accommodations. This trip will leave us with incredible memories, and we hope to visit Japan again in the future.
We really enjoyed our stay at the apartment - it was a perfect base for exploring Kyoto - Gion is fantastic. We also enjoyed the Japanese talking bath! We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Kyoto and we will recommend it to our friends!
I don't want to duplicate previous comments other than to say that I look forward to staying in apartment again next time I visit Kyoto. I have suggested that friends/family consider staying in the apartment should they visit Kyoto.
Wonderful apartment for our stay in Kyoto. My wife and I stayed here with our two children, aged 3 and eight months for two weeks and found it a great home base. The apartment is very well finished and with some amazing mod-cons (like the talking bath). Size-wise it's compact but the space is sufficient and efficiently used. We stayed in August so the heat in Kyoto was stifling so the air-con was always a 'welcome home' treat. Location is excellent and I highly recommend visiting the stunning nearby temples in the evening, after all the tour buses have left, and you can truly enjoy the zen spirit.
These apartments are a great base for any Kyoto trip. Clean, includes critical AC for the summer, and conveniently located. Plus there is a ramenya right around the corner... Curtis and Ayako were very helpful, our party would definitely use this place again.
Stayed at the Gion Apartments during our trip to Kyoto and found it was everything we were looking for. Was easy to stay in with out 8 month old infant, and accessible to all the major sites we were interested in seeing. Would definitely stay here again!
Stayed during Gion Matsuri and loved it. We were able to walk to the parade and the location was extremely convenient for access to bus/subway. We also stayed in Takayama, Matsumoto, Tokyo, Osaka and Hakone. All nice accommodations but the Gion Apartment was our favorite place to stay.
Our family rented 2 apartments. Wonderful and spacious apartments with all the conveniences of home! Very convenient to have self check-in and check out. The location was convenient to restaurants (several block walk) and food markets. We also felt it was a great location to visit many temples on our itinerary. Would highly recommend!!
Highly recommended. As many of the previous comments stated, this place provided easy access to subway, buses and points of interest. Very clean, safe and well supplied with everything that you could possibly need. I would certainly stay here again at my next opportunity.
Highly recomended! Great location, very easy to find. Human sizes of spaces and beds ( important for Japan). We was two adults and we enjoyed it a lot. More comfortable than hotel for this price. Everything is very practical and functional.
What a great place to stay in Kyoto! My wife and I stayed here for 8 days recently and we could not have chosen a better experience. Close to Gion, temples, transportation and restaurants. The description on VRBO is accurate and Curtis made the process proceed smoothly. Highly recommended.
Simply perfect ! Especially if you are looking for flexibility, this is it. Equipped with everything you need, it is also ideally located; step outside, and you will see one taxi following the next, using that shortcut to Gion district. Bus and subway station also within easy reach. Massage, convenient stores or nice pottery shops nearby, you can also try some 'oishii' Japanese food restaurants, such as the one just at the Kyomizu-bus stop. If you get your Japan Rail-pass, this is your ideal hub to explore Kyoto or whole Japan! We will come back, that's for sure - and a special thanks to Curtis and Ayako !
My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful week in Kyoto! The Gion apartment was an amazing find, exceeded our expectations, and was everything positive as described in all the other comments. It was convenient, secure, quiet, remarkably clean, and very spacious with all the necessities. We could even do our laundry in our unit at no additional cost! It was our home away from home and a great place to return to at the end of each long day of exploring and experiencing Kyoto! In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we are already planning a return trip in December to "share" Kyoto with our young adult children! Curtis and Ayako are wonderful professionals to work with, always delivering prompt, efficient, and courteous service with a "smile" I could feel through all the email messages exchanged between us! Arigato, Curtis-san and Ayako-san! I'm looking forward to working with you again!
Wonderful Apartment, great location and professional management/communication with Owner. I stayed in one apartment mid March through mid April for 4 weeks and it was everything I needed. I would stay here again and recommend to friends.
We had a wonderful stay. The apartment far exceeded our expectations. We stayed with our almost 2 year old son and found the apartment to be a great fit for our family. It was an amazing location--close to many restaurants, shopping and sites. We also appreciated the convenience of being able to rent bikes. Curtis was very helpful and assisted with all of our needs.
I was born in Japan near Kyoto, so I know the city pretty well. As a half native, I guranntee that the apartment will give you a 100% satisfaction. For foreign tourists, the location of this appartment is absolutely perfect. Most charming area in Kyoto, Higashiyama (Kiyomizu, Gion, Okazaki etc.) is all in walking distance. It is also very close to Keihan and Hankyu line major stations, so other important cities in Kansai such as Nara,Osaka and Kobe are all within one hour train ride. The apartment is very clean and comfortable. It is also well equipped. If I may add one request, I wanted to see a small dining table and a couple of chairs!
We were lucky enough to get this apartment just as the cherry blossom season started in 2008. Indeed, this apartment made our whole trip possible! We were two adults with two kids and only came home in the evenings. Although there are a few places to eat nearby, we often brought something back from the market. The kitchen had everything we needed. All formal arrangements (contract, key access) were very easy and the owner was also nice to deal with.
As with other guests I concur that these apartments are exceptionally clean, conveniently located and a perfect way to travel Japan. But the beauty in these appartments is the small details. They boast many amenities, i.e. kitchen utensils, coffeemaker, washer/dryer, full bath, etc. I was impressed that the kitchen knives were actually sharp, there were filters for coffee, laundry detergent, dish soap and shampoo/conditioner immediately available...items travelers often overlook when packing. The level of detail and care that is taken in these apartments is indicative of the overall experience. I highly recommend this location if you are traveling to Kyoto!
Great stay. A real find. Nicely appointed apartment in a very convenient location right on the edge of the Gion district. Convenient access to subways and buses and there are cabs everywhere. KEY TIP: The apartment building is NOT called "Gion Apartments" it is "Sartal" as in the address on the rental agreement.
I rented two apartments for three people. The location is quiet away from traffic noise. They are easy walking distance of Gion district, lots of restaurants and shops, and a 15 to 20 minute walk of Kyoto Station. Taxi rides are about 5 to 8 minutes, and typically $10US. I would not hesitate to recommend these apartments and would rent again for a future trip. The owner is very easy to work with also.
We loved Gion apartment. Lots of great pottery shops nearby as our favorite small restaurant which is very reasonable. We walked this lovely city from this great location.
The apartment in Gion was really wonderful and just perfect for us - with a Japanese bath as well! The location was superb, the apartment clean and welcoming. We stayed with our 7 month old daughter and 4 year old son. We had a fantastic stay in Kyoto and our son had a ball. The washing machine was a huge plus with young children. Thank you and we will definitely recommend it to any friends or family who happen to be coming to Kyoto. Tennent family, Sydney
We have just returned from a trip to Kyoto and we are really satisfied with the Gion apartment. It was very clean, very comfortable, quiet, well equipped.Well located, closed to a lot of things, walking distances too. The table was a bit low for our poor tired backs but otherwise we highly recommend this studio! Marie-Andree & Yves Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
We loved Gion Apartments. It's in a fantastic location - close walking distance to central Kyoto and the main sites. After touring the beautiful city we would spend our evenings wandering the banks of the river (close to the apartment) and then home through the pretty little streets nearby where we would often spot a Geisha. The apartment itself is wonderful. Clean, secure, quiet and comfortable - and well presented to boot! We enjoyed the opportunity for some home-cooked meals using bargain-priced fruit and veg from the shops nearby. - They even sell english language newspapers at the local convenience store. All and all a winner - when we go back to Kyoto (one can never say 'goodbye' to this city) we will certainly be staying at Gion.
The Gion Apartments in Kyoto were just what we needed for an enjoyable home base on a wonderful vacation. Our family of five stayed in two of your units and the accomodations were excellent. Thanks for listing on VRBO.
I would highly recommend staying at the Gion apartments. The only problem we had was finding the apartment. Even our taxi driver couldn't find it at first- it took him a couple of tries, but he got us there eventually. Other than that, everything was perfect. The location is fantastic for sight-seeing. You are very close to the Higashiyama area, and all its fine temples and walking trails. The Gion area has a lot to offer in terms of restaurants and beautiful streets and lanes. The apartment itself is very nice. It is clean and spacious. The kitchen has everything you need, and the laundry facilities are very convenient. The price is very reasonable considering the location and the quality of the apartment unit. Highly recommended!
I love this appartment. I regret I didn´t plan to stay here longer. It is better to stay in Kyoto because you can travel to many other different cities near Kyoto. The appartment is spacious and clean. My favorite part of the appartment is the shower it is huge and confortable. Also, the toilet is high tech. It had a shower (bidet?) and you can adjust the water to soft or a bit stronger and also you can push the botton for air so you can get dry after you get clean. Very high tech. We were very busy so no time to cook or make any meals. We just needed a safe, clean and nice place to sleep. I highly recommend this apartment and in my case it was better to stay in this city rather longer in Tokyo. To reach the appartment just follow the instructions given by the owner and you are on the right path. The appartment is located near some temples and the Gion quaters and maybe 5 mins walking to a metro station. Transportation is very convenient or you can just rent the bike. Everybody rides the bike. I really enjoyed this appartment. It was perfect for us.
My husband and I just arrived at the Gion Apt with our 6-month old and are looking forward to our stay in apt #105. Transfer to the Gion Apt from Kansai Airport via Yasaka Taxi was quick and efficient (highly recommended). The Gion apt is spacious (by japanese standards), spotlessly clean, and well appointed with many ammenities and user-friendly appliances. Location is great! Curtis and Ayako are responsive and a pleasure to work with. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience life like a local while visiting Kyoto.
My husband and I stayed in the Gion apartment for a week in late April 2008. The apartment itself is very clean and there was plenty of room for the two of us. We took advantage of traveling light by making good use of the washing machine in the apartment. When we arrived we took a taxi cab from Kyoto station to the apartment which only took about 10 minutes and cost less than $10. The apartment is in a great location being within walking distance of many temples, shrines, shopping, and of course the Gion district. We also took the subway to places that were further away. We had a great experience in Japan, and for us, we like the convenience of renting apartments which are more reasonably priced than hotels.
We had a great stay in this apartment. The shuttle from the airport was convient and resonably priced (Yasaka). It is close to Keihan,Gojo train station, just a 5 minute walk, and a 15 min walk to the subway. We loved our home away from home. It was clean and nice. We felt completely safe and at home. The bathroom and kitchen were great, and we found many great little places to eat around the block.
I had a very pleasent stay in the Gion apartment. Everything is almost new and very clean. The room and bathroom are rather large for the Japanese standards. The location is halfway between the Gion quarter and the Kyoto National Museum. I will defenetly use again.
Forget about booking a hotel- the Gion Apartment is perfect for a stay in Kyoto! It's clean, comfortable, efficient and convenient, and it's wonderful to have the flexibility of a kitchen and washer/dryer. We loved our home away from home, and would recommend it without hesitation to anyone traveling to Kyoto.
I just got back from travelling with my adult son to Japan and while in Kyoto we stayed at the Gion apartment. It was in a great location, within easy walking distance for subway connection to Kyoto station, taxis were nearby and easy to get, and the neighbourhood was wonderful for walking. The apartment itself was just the right size, modern, clean, and comfortable. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyne spending time in Kyoto and definitely plan to stay there when I go back!
I stayed in Gion apartment for one month, this Spring. It was great experience to be located in the Center of Gion, surrounded by old machiyas. The apartment has all the facilities to make your stay comfortable and safe. The contact persons from US and Japan were very helpful, reassuring and efficient. I will recommend this place to my friends.
Would highly recommend. We needed two apartments for the five of us. Kids liked having their own apartment. Great facilities and lots of activities/sights/shopping within walking distance. Apartments were well equiped and clean. Was great having a home base to travel from. Easy access to train station. Would also recommend the Yasaka shuttle service from the airport - much more convenient then luggage on trains. Definitely would recommend
We stayed at the 1 bedroom studio back in November 2007 with our 3 & 1/2 year old son. Initially we were worried it would be too small but it turned out to be just the right size. It was clean, had a well equipped kitchen with an easy to use washer/dryer It also had a reasonably sized bathroom which our son loved where he could turn the whole bathroom into a shower with the hand held shower head. Very Japanese and a lot of fun for him. It is well located with a small supermarket nearby. There were also a number of good restaurants just around the corner (a barbecue noodle pancake place was our favourite) and some very up market ones just over the river. It is a short walk to the Geisha area and a bus ride to the main sites and Kyoto station so getting around to the sites was very easy. For our son there was a playground ten minutes walk away. Great to give him a rest from the temples. In short, it is a great place to use as your base for a Kyoto city which was our favourite city in the 3 week visit. Don't worry about a Ryokan as you can do them in places like Hakone or Takiyama. We would definitely stay there again.
Do yourself a very big favour and stay at Gion Apartments, it is well located to all your needs. Namely, all forms of transport; bus service within thirty footsteps, train service within five minutes. As expressed by previous reviewers, food is an enjoyable experience, whether you decide to eat in or eat out there are numerous shops and eateries in close proxcimity. The apartment is very comfortable with all the necessary items you require for day to day living and is refreshing to have adequate space (those of you who have endured a japanese hotel know what I mean). After a full day of touring a great city like Kyoto it is greatly appreciated to come back to an apartment that has comfortable beds and a surrounding environment that is extremely quiet internally within the block as well as the external neighbouring properties.
We (myself, my husband, and two children aged 3 months and 2.5 years old) stayed at the Gion apartments, Kyoto, for 11 nights in January 2008. We have already traveled extensively with our 2 year old (he has logged over 40 commercial flights thus far). We found the apartments to be very useful for our stay in Kyoto with the kids. The central location and proximity to the subway lines meant that we could stroll everywhere. The apartment we had was on the ground floor which made for an easy stroll in and out of the apartment itself. Had we known there was a bike lock room just off the entrance to the apartment we would have brought a lock which would have saved packing and unpacking the stroller every day, and thus make it even more convenient. The apartment we had had dividing doors between the main room and the beds -- good for naps & early sleeps by the kids. Having a kitchen and laundry makes travel with kids sooo much easier I find. Lots of places to get food (a large grocery store, various convenience stores, as well as restaurants) within a few blocks of the apartment. The booking of the apartment was easy. Used the transport recommended by the agency (Yasaka). They met us upon arrival at the airport and they had vans that easily fitted our children's car seats. Overall, an excellent place to stay in a very interesting city!
In addition to all the previous comments about the cleanliness, location, equipment and safety of the apartment, as well as the efficiency and friendliness of the service (which we can only confirm), we can only say that it was great for a change not to have to hang a 'do not disturb' sign at the door when we wished to sleep in and that we didn't have to care about missing breakfast! The days spent at the Gion Apartment gave us a piece of well appreciated independence in a wonderful city.
We recently stayed for 9 days and were very pleased with the apartment. It is superbly located for hitting the major sights in Kyoto and is also fairly close to the JR Kyoto station for travel within the Kansai region. There are several convenience stores literally around the corner for stocking up the kitchen. The apartment itself was quite clean and comfortable with all the amenities. We would certainly stay in the Gion Apartments again.
My friends and I stayed at the Gion apartment for 1 week and it was amazing! It was very clean and had all the amenities we required. Convenience stores, great eateries and a train station within walking distance.. What else could we have asked for! We would definitely want to return there in the near future!
We stayed in Kyoto over New Year's and had a wonderful time. The Gion apartment worked out perfectly. We walked to many places and were always tired and happy to come back in the evening. The apartment had everything we needed, it was very clean, comfortable, and compared with the apartment we rented in Tokyo, generously sized. The kitchen was fully equipped and allowed us to go to the local supermarkets and have breakfast "at home". All in all, we were very happy we chose the apartment over a hotel and would recommend it without hesitation.
Planning a visit to Kyoto and considering the various ryokan and hotel options? STOP! Make no plans until you've checked out the Gion Apartments on VRBO! There could be no better deal in town -- clean, modern, perfectly located, efficient heat, washer/dryer, bikes to rent and a full kitchen. We rented one of these apartments for six weeks and saved thousands of yen by cooking our own breakfasts and dinners (check out the "Happy Rokuhara" supermarket a few blocks away off of Matsubara-dori, or Fresco -- open 24 hours -- on Kawabata-dori). These apartments are an especially good choice if you're traveling with teenagers or another couple -- just rent another apartment and everyone can retreat and recharge at the end of the day. Oh, and there's a Japanese-style ofuro bathtub, complete with a lady's voice that alerts you to when the tub is full! English-speaking staff, honest and professional.
Just returned from a wonderful stay in Kyoto and wanted to echo the comments of other guests. The apartment is in a great location for both day and night-time activities. To go further afield we walked and used the buses, which was really easy, but the station's nearby. A great place to crash at the end of the day - spotlessly clean, very comfortable and spacious with modern appliances. We really loved it and it's so much better than a hotel. Highly recommended.
After hours taken to arrive in kyoto, it was most comforting to land in this apartment. It was equipped with almost everything required for a pleasant stay, and access to and fro the location was not a problem. The local assistant also provided us with a link for an airport transfer which we thought was great. Would highly recommend this place.
This has been a most delightful two weeks of exploring Kyoto,& Nara and with the Gion Apts as our home-base only made our stay perfect. We immediately felt taken care of when we stepped into the the secure, clean and comfort of our nest, all of our needs were met and more. The location ideal. Curtis delivers only professional and friendly attention, we greatly appreciated his ongoing cooperation. Thank you, be back soon.
We agree with all the positive comments we saw on the web site: convenience, comfort, clean, modern appliances (great toilet!), quiet neighborhood, easy access to transportation. The A/C was a welcome refuge in fiercely humid weather. It would be helpful to note that the A/C control is a portable remote. We welcomed the instructions in English on the washer/dryer; needed help operating toilet & electric stove. A great place for enjoying the city. Clif & Judy
This apartment is fantastic. The location is ideal for exploring Kyoto. It is within walking distance of at least two major temples and there is good shopping and restaurants also within walking distance. The apartment itself is extremely modern and clean. It was constructed in the past few years and has pretty much everything you need. (Air conditioner, full kitchen, high speed internet.) There is an English-speaking local contact who can provide assistance and in all my dealings with the owners of this apartment, they have been very honest and pleasant to work with. I highly recommend this place.
All the comforts of home - well designed room layout, comfortable beds, hardwood floors. This was the most pleasant way to start our visit to Japan. We loved the convenience and privacy of staying in an apartment. (This was a great deal compared with using a hotel.)This unit is close to transportation, major sightseeing, taxis and located in a quiet neighborhood! Kyoto was a great base for many of our day trips - Nara is a must see city! The Japanese soaking tub was a surprise and a great way to relax after an all day outing.Top quality furnishings, complete kitchen with microwave, dishes, utensils, pots and pans! We will use this apartment again whenever we are in Kyoto. Feel free to contact us with any questions. This is truly a hidden treasure!
Your Apt was a wonderful introduction to our stay in Japan. It was super convenient, well appointed and did not lack for anything... except directions in English for the bath and the toilet. Luckily there were no mishaps! We will certainly tell our friends about it. Thanks for sharing with us. Barbara and Avner Jerusalem, Israel
We spent almost two weeks in this agreeable Gion appartment in April 2007, and were very satisfied with its nice standing and usefull situation. Very well furnished, it's situated in a lovely quiet area with almost all facilities nearby, and close to many major sightseeings. Another great point: the owner is really very kind and honest, and the Japan contact easy to join and to speak English with. We just can strongly recommend this appartment!
We loved our stay in the apartment! The rooms were very nicely furnished, comfortable, and full of cool appliances. It was conveniently located next to the major Gojo subway station, and was very close to downtown Gion and Kiyamachi. The Japan contact was easy to call (there is a pay phone near the apartment) and helped us out with figuring out a flat tire on one of the bikes. Thanks for a great stay!
We recently stayed at the Gion apartment and felt it was a wonderful location to explore Kyoto from. The interior furnishings from Muji were so appealing to us that we actually went and checked out the store itself! The place is cozy and warm and taking a furo each night was amazing. The contact person for the apartments in Kyoto, Tukuji Tanaka, was super helpful, spoke good english and was always available to assist us with anything that was needed. We would definately recommend this place and hope to return in the future ourselves. Aloha.
We really enjoyed our time in this apartment. It is modern (new), well appointed, quiet and comfortable. The apartment is in walking distance to sights in Gion and across the river Kamo to the central city. The river is ideal for walking, jogging or cycling. Public phones, transport, convenience stores and restaurants are also very close. This apartment makes an excellent base. Highly recommended.
Very modern, clean and quiet apartment. Good location with a short walk to Gion Corner, main shopping areas, restaurants, and several attractions including Kiyomizu-dera. The location is also good for taxis and for getting buses to the main attractions. We enjoyed our time at this apartment immensely because of its central location making it easy to get to most places. Although apartment is modern, it is surrounded by many traditional, old japanese houses. Highly recommended!
We stayed here for a week in November, 2006 and had a great time. Great location and very comfortable! The apartment was quite spacious for two people (for Japan) and everything was new, clean, and well-appointed. We liked being within walking distance to Kiyomizudera, Shijo, and the rest of Gion. There were some great little restaurants, art stores, and a great 99 yen convenience store in the neighborhood. Highly recommended!
We just spent six nights in this apartment, and highly recommend it! It is very well situated for getting around Kyoto, and extremely comfortable. We had no problems and are extremely satisfied.
